A basement fire at 16 Forge Rd kept Kinnelon’s firefighters busy all night March 18th taking till 9am the following morning to fully extinguish. Investigators believe a fire in the basement drop ceiling was burning well before the owners smelled smoke or the detectors picked it up. Firefighting efforts were hampered by water supply issues. The nearest water was about 4000 feet away. Water had to be shuttled and relayed from a pond 1200 feet to the bottom of Forge Rd, then pumped all the way up the mountain another 1000 feet to the cul de sac where another pumper sent it the final 800 feet up the steep driveway to the attack engine. Over 75 firefighters were on scene from Kinnelon, Butler, Bloomingdale, Montville, Riverdale, Pequannock, and West Milford. Triboro first aid also stood by.

Kinnelon participates in Pequannock Drill

On Sunday December 6th, 2009 members of Kinnelon Vol Fire Co participated in a drill with Pequannock Co’s 1 and 2 at a building being demolished at 590 Route 23.  The owner of the property, Route 23 Honda was gracious enough to donate the structure allowing the two towns to practice a fire attack on a real commercial structure.  Smoke was provided by a theatrical smoke machine.  Kinnelon’s members provided RIT (rapid intervention Team) services.  All present benefited from extensive training in forcible entry.  Videos from the training are/ will be available on the KVFC photo gallery page.  Thank you to Pequannock for allowing KVFC the opportunity to drill with them. We look forward to the next one.

Kinnelon assists at Riverdale brush fire

A fast moving brush fire first spotted by Kinnelon Fire Chief Gail Bresett as she exited Home Depot across Route 23 resulted in a response by Riverdale FD, NJ Forest Fire Service and Kinnelon Fire Co.  Kinnelon was requested to supply water to Riverdale units on scene who layed upwards of 1000 feet of fire hose to contain a fast moving brush fire behind Cotlass Road in Riverdale.  Since no hydrants exist, Kinnelon’s tankers brought over 7000 gallons of water on three trucks.  Tanker 33, Tanker 2 and Engine 3 delivered water directly to the scene, while Engine 11 set up a fill point at the Home Depot across the street.  Four Kinnelon members assisted Riverdale’s crews already operating on the hillside in containing and overhauling the site.  Wanaque First Aid Squad assisted with rehab.  The entire operation was over in an hour and a half.  The Record carried the story.
